USAWA Club Build Out

High Country Vigour (HCV)

All Round Weightlifting requires quite a bit of equipment in order to contest 195 lifts.  The majority (150) can be done with basic equipment.  There are also (13) Fulton bar lifts.  The only class of lifts that stand alone are the Heavy Lifts and variations (8) which require a special heavy lift bar and accessories.  Finally, special equipment is needed for another (24) lifts.
  • Barbell, plates, dumbbell handles, collars, rack
  • Fulton Bar
  • Fulton Dumbbells
  • Finger Lift Ring
  • Heavy Lift Bar
  • 2" Vertical Bars
  • 1" Vertical Bars
  • Roman Chair
  • Inch Dumbbells
  • Weaver Stick
  • Saxon Plank
  • Foot Press Apparatus
  • Back Lift Apparatus
  • 3" Barbell
  • Trap Bar
  • Dinnie Handles
  • 3.5" Dumbbell Handle
  • Rim Lift Stubby Bar
  • 3x4 Metal Saxon
  • Hand & Thigh Bar
  • Hip Belt
  • Neck Harness
  • Chest Harness
  • Teeth Bit
  • Travis Lift attachment
  • Hand & Thigh Bar
  • Hand Rails
HCV can contest 186 of the 195 lifts in the 13th edition of the record book.
  • A. Bar Lifts - Presses, Snatches, Cleans, Jerks (47/48) - Need a Roman Chair to contest Bench Press - Roman Chair
  • B. Bar Lifts - Deadlifts (23/23)
  • C. Bar Lifts - Squats (9/9)
  • D. Bar Lifts - Miscellaneous (26/28) - Need a Roman Chair for Abdominal Raise - On Roman Chair and Extension - Back
  • E. Dumbbell Lifts (22/22)
  • F. Fulton Bar (2" Bar) Lifts (13/13)
  • G. Heavy Lifts (4/5) - Need Back Lift apparatus
  • H. Old-Time Strongman (15/16) - Need Saxon Snatch plank
  • I. Special Equipment Lifts (27/31) - Need Trap Bar, 3.5" Dumbbell Handle, Foot Press apparatus, Roman Chair
Finishing the build out would take $1000 for the Back Lift / Foot Press Apparatus and another $600 for everything else.

I will rig up a Roman Chair.  I will probably hold off on everything else due to space constraints and limited use.
  • Trap Bar - Hard to store ($100 on secondary markets) +1 lift
  • 3.5" Dumbbell Handle - I will probably buy one of these ($50 Arm Assassin) +1 lift
  • Saxon Snatch Plank - This is a pretty straightforward ($60) DIY project with 2x4, base plate and metal pipe.  I have not pursued this ever since trying it at 2024 Nationals + 1 lift
  • Roman Chair - I have given up on finding a vintage Roman Chair and pursuing the fabrication route, most likely with an foot hold attached to a wall and an 18" high bench ($35) + 3 lifts
  • Back Extension - I have found these for as cheap as $50 on the secondary markets, but have yet to pick one up due to space. + 1 lift
  • Back Lift apparatus - It is unlikely we will ever make the space for a Back Lift / Foot Press apparatus.  They can be had for $1000-$2000 but take up a big foot print and are a pain to load and unload. + 2 lifts
I have fabricated/bought plenty of equipment ($1,243) specifically for USAWA lifting.  In most cases I have used the items less than 5 times and more often only once.
  • Fulton Dumbbells ($92 1/26/2024) Nemesis Grips
  • Inch Dumbbells ($102 1/26/2024) Nemesis Grips
  • Teeth Bit ($11 + time 8/20/2023) DIY
  • Hip Belt ($110 + time 4/25/2024) DIY
  • Fulton Barbell ($40 11/30/2023) Unbranded
  • Vertical Bars ($350, 1/26/2024 & 9/7/2024) FBBC
  • Weaver Stick ($8 + time, 2024) DIY
  • 3" Bar without knurling ($125, 11/19/2024) Titan Fitness
  • Dinnie Handles ($150, 11/30/2023) Cerberus
  • Neck Harness ($35, 4/12/2024) IronMind
  • Heavy Lift Bar ($140, 1/24/2025) Arm Assassin
  • Hand & Thigh Bar ($70, 1/24/2025) Arm Assassin
  • Harness ($0 + time, 12/12/2024) DIY
  • Travis Lift Attachments ($10 + time, 12/8/2024) DIY (NEED TO TEST); Utility loops are also available from Rogue Fitness and Belt Fed Strength)
Outstanding
  • Trap Bar ($130 Titan) +1
  • 3.5 Inch Dumbbell Handle (<$100) +1
  • Saxon Plank ($50-$60 DIY) +1
  • Roman Chair (TBD) +4
  • Foot Press Apparatus (NA) +1
  • Back Lift Apparatus (NA) +1

5 Ways to Grow the USAWA in 2025 - A Rebuttal

I would typically avoid being a naysayer or cynical without offering another solution or constructive criticism, but a recent article on usawa.com struck a nerve with me. It was entitled "5 Ways to Grow the USAWA in 2025" and suggested Recruiting meet directors in geographic areas without a USAWA presence Making Nationals a can't miss event Modernize logo Encourage sponsorship with uniform changes (knee sleeves and leggings) Embrace change I was originally set back by the premise that USAWA wants to grow.  It has always been a 100ish athlete all volunteer organization with modest budget.  Income consists of membership fees, meet sanctioning fees and donations.  Expenses include drug testing, web hosting and awards.  The organization has stayed in the fringes since 1987 specifically by not getting too big for its britches. Recruiting meet directors is a great idea.  However, assuming athletes want odd lifting, they will need at least one official who would have t...
