Sanjiv is a Level 2 Certified Official

Rules Test Passed - 7/6/2023

The rules test is a 100 question open book test that really makes sure the applicant is familiar with the lifts, commands, common faults as well as competition procedure and uniform standards.

Level 1 Certification - 2/17/2024

This practical training requires (3) training sessions alongside a Level 2 official.  In 2023 video training became acceptable for up to (2) training sessions.  I completed (2) video training sessions in 2023 and finally completed my Level 1 at the Dino Gym Grip Championship.

Level 2 Certification - 4/7/2025

This lifetime certification requires (25) officiating sessions.  The intent is to gain confidence as an official and to have more hands on experience with the lifts and commands.  In 2024, USAWA would allow officiating in USA Weightlifting or USA Powerlifting to count for up to (15) of those sessions.

I completed the (25) session in just over a year.  These included the 2024 Colorado Spring Fling, 2024 USAWA Nationals, 2024 IAWA World Championship, Colorado Single Arm Challenge and 2025 Club Championship.  The remaining (20) sessions were hybrid/postal meets that are less intense, but certainly allowed for officiating a significant portion of the rule book.

Among the (25) sessions, (130) of (230) different lifts were contested and officiated over.

One big benefit of being a Level 2 Official is the authority to oversee Level 1 Practical Sessions.  Having a Level 2 in Colorado will help aspiring officials complete certification.

5 Ways to Grow the USAWA in 2025 - A Rebuttal

I would typically avoid being a naysayer or cynical without offering another solution or constructive criticism, but a recent article on usawa.com struck a nerve with me. It was entitled "5 Ways to Grow the USAWA in 2025" and suggested Recruiting meet directors in geographic areas without a USAWA presence Making Nationals a can't miss event Modernize logo Encourage sponsorship with uniform changes (knee sleeves and leggings) Embrace change I was originally set back by the premise that USAWA wants to grow.  It has always been a 100ish athlete all volunteer organization with modest budget.  Income consists of membership fees, meet sanctioning fees and donations.  Expenses include drug testing, web hosting and awards.  The organization has stayed in the fringes since 1987 specifically by not getting too big for its britches. Recruiting meet directors is a great idea.  However, assuming athletes want odd lifting, they will need at least one official who would have t...
